I just couldn't get into this. I think the narrating baby is what I can't deal with--he's obnoxious and, in case you missed it, he's a baby. I don't understand babies when they can't talk, let alone this one that only talks about Hitler and breastfeeding. I'm sure it's good, as it won a ton of awards, but it was just too dry for me and really weird.This is a story that needs to be told. The Lebensborn program, where the Nazis literally bred people with superior Aryan characteristics in order to create a master race, is not something that you hear a lot about. Overall, this is a detailed and researched insight into the lebensborn programme, a Nazi enterprise that sought to breed racially pure children to be the leaders of the third reich. The story is narrated my the first child of this programme, from before his birth until he is 10 and the Second World War has ended. I found it exhausting but important. It was not unbearably gruesome but, despite the narrator seeing and supporting the horrific events of the SS (in particular), it did not at all

The ending was a lot stronger than early in the book. Was ready to abandon it with the unnecessary swearing and description.
