Elective Affinities was written when Goethe was sixty and long established as Germany's literary giant. This is a new edition of his penetrating study of marriage and passion, bringing together four people in an inexorable manner. The novel asks whether we have free will or not and confronts its characters with the monstrous consequences of repressing what little "real life" they have in themselves, a life so far removed from their natural states that it appears to them as something terrible and destructive.

I think the translation is partly to blame for why I didn't particularly enjoy this one: the language is awkward and stilted, with wooden dialogue and unnecessarily archaic terms. The plot, though, isn't especially well handled either. A couple invites to separate houseguests to stay with them, the husband's friend and the wife's foster niece, and finds their marriage rocked by their attractions to the newcomers. The novella is apparently meant to be a meditation on the power of marriage versusA proper analysis of this book can only be executed by readers with a thorough knowledge of early 19th-century literary tropes and gender roles.
